King Prithvi Narayan Shah began the unification of Nepal in the mid-18th century, starting with his conquest of the small kingdoms in the Kathmandu Valley. He expanded his kingdom by military campaigns, forming a unified Nepal in 1768, laying the foundations of modern Nepal.
